Amazon explores putting $8 billion of Nvidia chips into an investor-funded vehicle
Saturday, October 3, 2026
Amazon is exploring a way to move roughly $8 billion of advanced Nvidia chips into a separate vehicle financed by outside investors, according to the Financial Times. That vehicle would own the chips, while Amazon would lease them back and continue using them in its US data centers. In practical terms, Amazon would give up ownership of the hardware without giving up access to the computing power needed for AI services, shifting more of the upfront expense to outside financiers. The talks are still preliminary, but the proposal illustrates how the cost of building AI infrastructure is leading even the biggest cloud companies to seek new ways to fund it.
