Anthropic hires Google TPU veteran Amir Salek to build its own chips

Sunday, August 23, 2026

Anthropic has hired Amir Salek, a longtime Google chip executive who helped build the company’s Tensor Processing Unit program, as it begins laying the groundwork for its own semiconductors. The move suggests the Claude maker is serious about reducing reliance on outside chip suppliers and building more of its own computing infrastructure. Salek is expected to join Anthropic’s compute team and report to its compute lead, James Bradbury. The hiring matters because custom chips can give AI companies more control over performance, cost, and supply at a time when demand for computing power is surging.
