Anthropic Talks With Samsung to Manufacture Custom 2nm AI Chips

Anthropic, the world's most valuable non-public AI startup, is in early talks with Samsung Electronics to potentially manufacture a custom AI chip using Samsung's upcoming 2nm process technology, marking a concrete step toward the company's goal of producing its own hardware to address chip shortages and reduce long-term dependence on Nvidia. While these discussions represent a significant move in the evolving AI hardware landscape toward vertically integrated silicon design, the project remains in a preliminary stage with no final decisions made on the chip's architecture, power, or server integration, and Anthropic could still abandon the plan before production. Importantly, the company has stated that any future proprietary chip would complement rather than replace its existing computing partnerships with Amazon's Trainium, Google's tensor processing units, and Nvidia graphics processors, which will continue to be central to its compute strategy as it also evaluates processors from Microsoft and the UK startup Fractile.
