Anthropic has developed Mythos, its most powerful AI model to date, which represents a significant leap forward in artificial intelligence capabilities—but one that has sparked serious security concerns among experts and government officials. The company confirmed it is testing the model with a limited group of early access customers after its existence was revealed through a data leak in March.
According to Anthropic, Mythos represents "a step change" in performance compared to its previous leading model, Claude Opus 4.6. The company says the new model demonstrates dramatically higher scores on tests of software coding, academic reasoning, and cybersecurity. Rather than simply identifying security vulnerabilities, Mythos can execute a complete "cyber kill chain"—not just finding bugs but actually exploiting them end-to-end. The model has reportedly discovered thousands of zero-day vulnerabilities, security flaws that are previously unknown to software developers and vendors.
The dual-use nature of this capability is driving widespread apprehension. While the ability to uncover security flaws could theoretically help organizations patch vulnerabilities before malicious actors discover them, experts worry that the technology is too powerful to release publicly. The concern centers on the asymmetry: if Mythos capabilities become widely available, cyberdefenses could be exposed and exploited faster than security patches could be developed and deployed, leaving systems vulnerable to attack.
However, not all experts believe Mythos's capabilities are as unique as Anthropic suggests. According to Jaya Baloo, COO and CISO of cybersecurity firm Aisle, testing has shown that cheaper, open-source AI models can identify the same vulnerabilities that Anthropic has highlighted. Baloo's team found that even tiny open-source models like GPT 5.4 can discover the same bugs, and in some cases have found vulnerabilities that Mythos missed. This challenges Anthropic's positioning of Mythos as uniquely powerful in cybersecurity applications.
The model's emergence comes as AI capabilities are being applied to military and intelligence operations. Beyond cybersecurity, Mythos is being incorporated into U.S. military workflows to enhance strike coordination and intelligence analysis, according to experts examining the model's applications. These broader uses underscore why government institutions and security officials are closely monitoring Mythos's development and release timeline.
Anthropic has stated it is being "deliberate" about how it releases the model, describing the current testing phase with early access customers as standard industry practice.
