European Commission readies anonymous age verification app to protect minors online
The European Commission has announced that a new age verification app is technically ready for deployment, offering a privacy-preserving solution to restrict minors' access to age-restricted online content across the European Union. President Ursula von der Leyen confirmed the technology is ready and will soon be available for citizens, addressing a key requirement under the EU's Digital Services Act to protect children from harmful and inappropriate material, including pornography, gambling, and alcohol-related services.
The app operates through a straightforward process: users download it from an app store and set it up using proof of identity such as a passport or national ID card. Once configured, the app allows users to confirm they meet age requirements when accessing restricted online services without disclosing their identity or unnecessary personal information. The solution is completely anonymous by design, meaning that online platforms and service providers cannot see who users are—only that they have verified their age eligibility.
What distinguishes this initiative is its technical foundation and accessibility. Built on open-source technology and aligned with the eIDAS 2.0 framework, the app works on any device and is free for online platforms to integrate into their services. The modular architecture and adherence to open standards enable seamless interoperability across EU member states, with comprehensive technical documentation available to developers and service providers. Some EU countries are already planning to integrate the app into their national digital identity wallets, with the Commission calling on more member states and private sector companies to adopt it.
The deployment of this app represents a shift in enforcement responsibility toward the platforms themselves. Rather than relying solely on government regulation, the technology enables porn sites, social media platforms, and other restricted services to implement age verification directly.
