Google tests whether AI data centers can work in space
Google’s Project Suncatcher is exploring a far-future version of AI infrastructure: networks of solar-powered satellites that would do some of the work now handled by power-hungry data centers on Earth. Al Jazeera reports that Google has already sent a prototype satellite into orbit carrying its AI chips, but this is a hardware test—not a working space data center. The appeal is straightforward: satellites in the right orbit can receive nearly continuous sunlight, potentially easing pressure on electricity grids, land and water used by large computing facilities. The hard part is everything that makes space hostile to electronics, including radiation, heat removal in a vacuum, launch costs and the ultra-fast links needed to make many satellites behave like one computing system.
