Huawei targets 2027 for its next Ascend AI chip
Saturday, September 19, 2026
Huawei is reportedly preparing the Ascend 960, a new AI chip expected in the first quarter of 2027 and aimed at giving Chinese companies a more capable alternative to Nvidia. These chips are the specialized processors that do much of the work of training and running large AI models, making them a strategic bottleneck for cloud providers and developers. Huawei’s effort matters because Nvidia’s lead is not just about chip speed: its software and developer tools have become the industry’s default platform. A new Ascend chip could widen China’s domestic options, but a launch alone would not establish an equivalent ecosystem or prove that Huawei has closed Nvidia’s broader computing gap.
