Match Group Invests $100 Million in Sniffies and Phases Out Archer App

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

Match Group, the powerhouse behind dating giants like Tinder, Hinge, Match, and OkCupid, has poured $100 million into Sniffies, a Seattle-based app designed for gay, bisexual, and sexually curious men seeking real-time hookups. The investment, announced on Monday, grants Match a significant minority stake along with an option to acquire the company outright in the future, according to reports from Bloomberg and Match Group's own press release. Sniffies, known for its interactive map of nearby users and cruising spots, will continue operating independently under founder and CEO Blake Gallagher.

This move marks Match Group's bold entry into the niche market for LGBTQ+ men's cruising apps, positioning Sniffies as a direct rival to Grindr. Unlike broader dating platforms, Sniffies emphasizes sex-positive exploration with features like location-based matching, over 20 million daily messages, and a global user base of roughly 3 million monthly active users. The app has expanded beyond mobile with merchandise, events, and its popular Cruising Confessions podcast, as noted by TechCrunch and GeekWire. Gallagher highlighted the partnership's potential to boost trust and safety, product improvements, and network growth in a LinkedIn post.

The deal mirrors Match Group's successful playbook with Hinge, where it took a minority stake in 2017 before a full acquisition in 2018. Spencer Rascoff, Match Group's CEO, praised Sniffies' deep user understanding in the announcement, signaling confidence in its growth trajectory. As part of the arrangement, Match plans to phase out its own three-year-old app for queer men, Archer, redirecting focus to Sniffies' established momentum. The company, already profitable with 65 employees, sees this as its first major funding round.

For Match Group, flush with $3.5 billion in 2025 revenue and $1 billion in free cash flow, the investment fills a gap in the fragmented LGBTQ+ men's dating space, where no single app dominates. Grindr leans into social features, but Sniffies stands out with its hyper-local, intent-driven approach. Users and the broader queer community stand to benefit from enhanced resources, while Match eyes long-term dominance in specialized dating. What happens next remains open: the minority stake keeps options flexible, but the acquisition path suggests Sniffies could soon join Tinder's portfolio if growth accelerates.
