Meta plans to begin manufacturing its custom in-house AI chip, code-named Iris, in September 2026 as a strategic move to double its computing capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2027 and reduce reliance on external GPU suppliers like Nvidia and AMD. The chip, which passed testing in just six weeks without major issues, was co-designed with Broadcom and will be manufactured by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to optimize AI performance for Facebook and Instagram. Rather than replacing existing hardware, Iris will supplement Meta's current fleet of Nvidia and AMD GPUs, helping lower massive computing costs while supporting the company's aggressive roadmap to launch a new AI chip roughly every six months through 2027.
