Oman’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has issued an urgent nationwide cybersecurity advisory warning citizens and residents about the severe dangers of using unauthorized or unverified Virtual Private Network (VPN) applications, which can expose users to data theft, identity fraud, and device compromise. The authority highlighted that many third-party VPN apps function as security traps by aggressively tracking personal data, logging online activities, requesting unnecessary device permissions, and harboring latent malware, spyware, and adware that silently infect smartphones and computers. Once established, these unverified connections can intercept web requests and redirect users to malicious or spoofed websites designed by cybercriminals to steal login credentials, banking details, and sensitive personal information. As part of a broader initiative to promote safe and ethical digital platform usage, the TRA strongly urges the public to remain vigilant, review app store permissions before downloading utilities, and rely exclusively on official, secure networks to prevent data breaches and shield private information from global cyber threats.
