QatarEnergy locks in US LNG as a backup supply

QatarEnergy, better known as one of the world’s biggest LNG exporters, has signed long-term contracts to buy up to 4 million metric tons a year from U.S. supplier Cheniere. The shipments, from Louisiana and Texas, are expected to start in 2031 and run through 2054, giving QatarEnergy gas it can market to customers when its own exports or Gulf shipping routes are constrained. LNG is natural gas chilled into a liquid so it can travel by ship; the deal shows QatarEnergy increasingly acting not just as a producer, but as a global trader building supply from more than one region.
