Qualcomm has agreed to acquire AI software startup Modular in an all-stock deal valued at nearly $4 billion to strengthen its AI software stack and developer tooling across devices and edge computing. The Silicon Valley-based company, which raised $250 million just nine months ago at a $1.6 billion valuation, offers a platform that allows developers to build and deploy AI across different hardware architectures without rewriting code for each processor. This acquisition, expected to close in the second half of 2026, will enable approximately 150 Modular employees, including its two co-founders, to transition to Qualcomm while the company continues operating as an independent entity in Los Altos, California. The move matters significantly as it enhances Qualcomm's ability to deliver a more optimized AI compute layer for generative and agentic AI across data centers and edge environments, directly impacting developers and businesses seeking efficient, unified AI solutions.
