Roku’s Howdy Service Surpasses 1 Million Subscribers in Under Eight Months

Thursday, April 30, 2026

Roku's Howdy streaming service has surpassed 1 million subscribers in less than eight months, according to data from research firm Antenna, marking a significant achievement for the company's entry into the competitive streaming market. Launched in August 2025 at just $2.99 per month, Howdy has become the cheapest ad-free streaming option available, tapping into growing consumer demand for affordable alternatives to premium services that have seen substantial price increases in recent years.

The service's rapid growth reflects its accessible pricing and distribution strategy. Howdy added approximately 300,000 subscribers in its first month alone, then maintained steady growth of at least 100,000 new subscribers each subsequent month. The expansion to a standalone mobile app on both iOS and Android, combined with availability through Amazon Prime Video, significantly broadened its reach beyond Roku's core platform and helped accelerate subscriber acquisition.

What distinguishes Howdy's performance is not just subscriber numbers but retention rates that exceed industry averages. Among users who signed up in August and September 2025, Antenna estimates that 51% remained subscribed six months later—a figure that outpaces the typical six-month retention rate for premium subscription services at 47% and specialty platforms at 38%. This suggests that consumers view Howdy as providing genuine value rather than treating it as a disposable subscription.

The service draws from a library of nearly 10,000 hours of content, featuring movies and older television series sourced through deals with major studios including Lionsgate, Warner Bros. Discovery, Sony Pictures, and Disney Entertainment. Titles include films like "The Blind Side" and "Mad Max: Fury Road," as well as series like "Weeds," positioning Howdy as a complement to rather than competitor with premium services offering current theatrical releases and original programming.

Roku's success with Howdy demonstrates a viable market segment for viewers fatigued by subscription fatigue. With more than 125 million people using the Roku platform daily, the company leveraged its existing user base while making the service accessible to broader audiences through multiple distribution channels. The milestone arrives as streaming economics continue evolving, with industry players increasingly testing lower-cost, ad-supported, or specialty models alongside traditional premium offerings.
