Russia Stages Nuclear-Capable Military Drills in Belarus Near NATO Borders

Russia has staged major nuclear-capable military exercises in Belarus, prompting fresh alarm across Europe and a stark warning from NATO that any misuse of nuclear threats would be dangerous and destabilizing. The drills, held close to NATO’s eastern borders, come as the war in Ukraine grinds on and as Western governments watch closely for signs that Moscow is trying to pressure the alliance as well as Kyiv.

According to reporting from The Independent, the exercises involved Russian and Belarusian forces and were presented by Moscow as routine training. But European officials described the timing and location as highly provocative, given Belarus’s role as Russia’s closest military partner and its position bordering Poland, Lithuania and Latvia. Those borders place the drills effectively on NATO’s doorstep and within a region already under intense security strain.

President Vladimir Putin said that using nuclear weapons would be a “last resort,” a statement that underscored how central nuclear signaling remains to the Kremlin’s strategy. At the same time, European leaders accused him of irresponsible rhetoric, arguing that Moscow is using the threat of escalation to intimidate its neighbors and weaken support for Ukraine. The exercises also reportedly included systems capable of carrying nuclear weapons, reinforcing the concern that Russia is deliberately blurring the line between conventional drills and nuclear deterrence.

The developments add to a broader pattern of tension between Russia and NATO. Western officials have repeatedly warned that Moscow is trying to regain the military initiative after setbacks in Ukraine, partly by raising the prospect of “armageddon” and making its neighbors feel more vulnerable. Belarus, which has hosted Russian troops and military equipment throughout the war, has become an increasingly important staging area for these signals.

For NATO members on the alliance’s eastern flank, the issue is not only the drills themselves but what they may be meant to communicate. Poland and the Baltic states in particular have seen Russian military activity as a direct challenge to regional security. The latest exercises are likely to intensify calls for stronger air defenses, closer allied coordination and continued support for Ukraine as Europe enters another tense phase of the conflict.
