Saudi Awwal Bank Q1 profit dips 2% to SAR 2,086 million as loans and deposits surge
Saudi Awwal Bank reported a net profit of SAR 2,086 million for the first quarter of 2026, marking a 2% decline from the same period last year, though the bank maintained a stable operating income and demonstrated strong balance sheet growth that underscores its financial resilience amid competitive market conditions.
The bank's total operating income remained flat at SAR 3,612 million compared to SAR 3,620 million in the first quarter of 2025, reflecting modest pressure on revenue streams even as the lender expanded its lending portfolio. Despite the year-on-year profit decline, the bank's performance slightly exceeded market estimates of SAR 2.06 billion, suggesting investor confidence in its operational trajectory.
The most notable strength in Saudi Awwal Bank's quarterly performance was the expansion of its balance sheet. Net loans and advances surged 10% year-on-year to SAR 307 billion, while customer deposits climbed 14% to SAR 331 billion, indicating robust customer confidence and the bank's growing market presence. This deposit growth outpaced loan expansion, providing the institution with additional liquidity and flexibility for future lending opportunities. Total equity also strengthened, increasing 11% year-on-year to SAR 81 billion, reinforcing the bank's capital base.
The modest profit decline appears attributable to higher debt provisions, which increased 16.9% to SAR 166 million, reflecting prudent risk management practices as the bank expanded its lending activities. Net special commission income—the primary revenue driver for Saudi banks—declined slightly by 1% year-on-year to SAR 2,870 million, suggesting competitive pressures on lending margins in the Kingdom's banking sector.
Saudi Awwal Bank's performance fits within the broader context of Saudi Arabia's banking sector, where larger lenders including Saudi National Bank and Riyad Bank posted stronger profit growth in the first quarter. The banking industry has benefited from sustained lending demand tied to Vision 2030 development projects, positioning Saudi Awwal Bank to capitalize on this momentum despite near-term margin pressures.
