Solar Power Records Largest Ever Growth in 2025 as World Enters Age of Electricity
In 2025, solar power achieved the largest growth ever recorded for any energy source worldwide, adding approximately 600 terawatt-hours of generation and marking a pivotal shift in global energy trends. According to the International Energy Agency's 2026 Global Energy Review, this surge positioned solar as the top contributor to energy supply growth, accounting for more than 25% of the increase and outpacing even natural gas.
The IEA declared that the world has entered the Age of Electricity, driven by electricity demand surging faster than overall energy use. While global energy demand rose by just 1.3% last year—below the previous decade's average due to slower economic growth, milder weather, and efficiency gains—electricity consumption continued its rapid climb.
