Starbucks reportedly explored a takeover of Chipotle
Starbucks has worked with advisers in recent months on a possible approach to buy Chipotle, according to the Financial Times. Nothing has been announced, and it remains unclear whether Starbucks made a formal offer or whether the idea will proceed. The report stands out partly because Starbucks chief executive Brian Niccol previously led Chipotle, so he knows the burrito chain’s operations and growth model unusually well. A deal would bring together two major but very different restaurant brands, potentially giving Chipotle a wider platform for expansion while asking Starbucks to take on a costly, complicated acquisition during its own turnaround.
