Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky lost his Republican primary on Tuesday, falling to Ed Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL backed by President Donald Trump, according to CBS News and other outlets projecting the race. The defeat ends Massie’s bid for an eighth term representing Kentucky’s 4th Congressional District, a solidly Republican seat in the northern part of the state.
Massie has long been one of the House’s most independent Republicans, often breaking with party leaders and with Trump on high-profile issues. The clash that helped define this primary came over Massie’s support for efforts to force the Justice Department to release records related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted sex offender whose case has fueled years of conspiracy theories and political controversy. Massie also opposed Trump’s tax-cutting legislation, a measure the former president has made central to his agenda, and Trump made clear in the primary that he wanted Massie out.
The race was closely watched as another example of Trump’s continuing influence over Republican primaries. In recent election cycles, the president has successfully targeted lawmakers he views as disloyal, and Massie’s defeat adds to that pattern. According to CBS News, Gallrein won by a comfortable margin, underscoring how Trump’s endorsement can still shape the GOP electorate in conservative districts.
The loss also prompted concern from some of Massie’s allies about what his exit means for the party. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said on social media that the Republican Party’s future was being “destroyed” and tied the defeat to the fight over releasing the Epstein files. Massie himself had argued before the vote that removing him would narrow the party’s ideological range and make it harder for Republicans to hold their majority in the House.
Gallrein now heads to the general election in a district that Republicans are favored to keep, but the primary result matters beyond Kentucky. It shows how internal party disputes, especially over loyalty to Trump, continue to shape Republican politics. Bloomberg also reported the same day that Trump endorsed Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in another sign that the former president remains deeply involved in deciding who should lead the party’s next generation of candidates.
