Visa’s Syria test opens a path for international cards

Visa has completed a live test of an international card payment in Syria with Fransabank Lebanon, which handled the merchant side of the transaction, and local payments company Paymera. That matters because it shows the basic chain behind a card purchase—from a merchant’s terminal through banks and Visa’s network—can now work across borders in the Syrian market. The immediate benefit could be practical: visitors may eventually pay with familiar cards rather than relying entirely on cash, while merchants gain another way to serve them. But this was a pilot, not a nationwide rollout; wider acceptance will depend on more banks, merchants, technology, and compliance systems being brought online.
