Aramco and SandboxAQ use AI to narrow the catalyst search

A recent report says Aramco and SandboxAQ are using specialized AI models to sift data on more than one million possible catalyst materials and identify the strongest candidates for laboratory testing. Catalysts are substances that make chemical reactions run faster or more efficiently, so better ones can matter across refining, fuels and chemical production. The useful shift is not that AI replaces the lab: it acts as an early filter, helping researchers focus costly experiments on a far smaller shortlist. That could speed the hunt for improved industrial processes, but the models’ suggestions still need to work under real laboratory and operating conditions.
