Cloudflare has launched a waitlist for its new Monetization Gateway, a tool that allows customers to charge for any resource behind its network—including web pages, datasets, APIs, and MCP tools—using stablecoin payments via the open x402 protocol. The gateway provides a single control plane to set and enforce payment policies at Cloudflare’s network edge, verifying transactions before requests reach the origin server and eliminating the need for developers to build their own payment infrastructure. Payments settle peer-to-peer in stablecoins like USDC, enabling cheap, sub-cent, pay-per-request transactions that solve a long-standing barrier for monetizing digital assets, particularly for AI agents and automated workflows. This move, supported by a coalition of over 25 industry leaders through the x402 Foundation, marks a significant step toward an agent-first Internet where machines can negotiate and complete payments programmatically over standard HTTP without redirects or separate payment APIs.
