DeepSeek reportedly raises $15 billion ahead of possible IPO

DeepSeek, the Chinese company whose models became a symbol of doing more AI work with less computing power, has reportedly completed a roughly $15 billion private round—among the largest financings for a Chinese startup. Reported backers include Tencent and battery maker CATL, while the company is also said to be preparing for a possible Shanghai listing. The significance is not just a bigger balance sheet: building and operating leading AI systems demands continuing investment in chips, data centers, and engineering. DeepSeek’s appeal was that it appeared able to narrow the gap with better-funded US labs efficiently; this funding would give it the resources to find out whether that approach can scale into a lasting global challenge. The company has not publicly confirmed the deal’s terms.
