Google tests paying publishers when their content powers AI answers

Thursday, October 1, 2026

Google is reportedly testing a new way to pay publishers whose material helps generate answers in AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Gemini. About 100 publishers are in the pilot, where Google pays for content it decides made a significant contribution to an answer—not simply for a link shown alongside it—and displays earnings in Search Console. That distinction matters because the old bargain of web search was traffic: a publisher supplied information, then earned money when people clicked through to its site. AI answers can satisfy a query before that visit happens, but the payment formula remains undisclosed and reported payouts vary widely, so the test is a meaningful shift in principle rather than a proven replacement for lost traffic.
