OpenAI commits $1 billion to cyber defense for essential services

OpenAI is committing $1 billion in subsidized access, training, technical support, and partnerships through a new program called Daybreak for Frontline Defenders. It targets often under-resourced teams protecting water systems, power networks, local government services, and banking—organizations whose systems are essential but can be complex and old. OpenAI’s premise is that the increasingly capable AI that could accelerate cyberattacks can also help defenders find weaknesses, investigate threats, and check fixes before they are exploited. Access is not simply open: OpenAI says participants will be vetted, and the more powerful tools will be limited to authorized work with human review and safeguards. The bet is that cost and staffing, not technology alone, are leaving a gap in the security of everyday services.
