DeepSeek plans a huge Huawei chip cluster for running AI

Saturday, September 5, 2026

DeepSeek is reportedly planning to install at least 160,000 of Huawei’s next-generation AI accelerators at a data center under construction in Inner Mongolia. These are the specialized chips that generate answers from an already-trained AI model—the everyday work of serving users—rather than the even more demanding job of training a model from scratch. That distinction matters: DeepSeek has experimented with Huawei hardware for training but has continued to rely on Nvidia chips for that stage, while this project would put Huawei at the center of a very large deployment for operating its models. The plan could make the site one of the biggest known Huawei AI-chip clusters, but its timetable depends on whether Huawei can manufacture enough of the chips.
