Shopify lets browser AI agents take shoppers through checkout
Shopify has extended its WebMCP tools from product search and cart-building into checkout, letting an AI agent working in a shopper’s browser read the live checkout, change details such as an address or delivery option, and submit the order. WebMCP is a proposed web standard that gives an agent structured ways to interact with a site, rather than making it decipher a page and imitate human clicks. The shopper remains in the loop: they see the checkout, handle steps such as payment authentication or Shop Pay sign-in, and must confirm the purchase. The change matters because it closes the last major gap in browser-based AI shopping, turning an assistant that can recommend and fill a cart into one that can help complete a transaction without moving the customer to a separate AI marketplace.
