SoftBank reportedly seeks $10 billion loan to refinance debt tied to its OpenAI investment

Sunday, August 30, 2026

SoftBank is seeking a roughly $10 billion loan to refinance borrowing used for its investment in OpenAI, according to people familiar with the matter. The proposed two-year facility could help repay part of a $40 billion bridge loan that SoftBank arranged in March to fund a new $30 billion OpenAI investment; the company still has a final $10 billion payment scheduled for October. SoftBank has said its cumulative OpenAI investment is expected to reach $64.6 billion, giving it an approximately 13% stake once that commitment is complete. The bigger point is that one of AI’s largest corporate bets is increasingly becoming a financing story: SoftBank is trying to replace short-term debt with a mix of new loans and potentially bonds, making lenders’ appetite part of the bet’s success.
