Sony Music Publishing and Warner Chappell sue Anthropic over alleged use of music to train Claude

Sony Music Publishing, Warner Chappell, and other publishers have sued Anthropic in Northern California, alleging that the AI company used copyrighted musical works without permission to build and operate Claude. The publishers say Anthropic obtained material through torrenting, scraping, and downloads, and also removed data identifying works, owners, and terms of use. The case is less about whether Claude can produce a song than about a more basic question: whether an AI developer acquired the material it learned from lawfully. Anthropic says it disagrees with the claims and will defend itself, but the suit adds to the pressure on AI companies to show where their training data came from.
