YouTube will begin counting a view as soon as a video starts playing on August 24, a change that brings its long-form videos in line with how Shorts, Instagram and TikTok measure views. The update is expected to push creators’ public view totals higher more quickly, while YouTube’s existing, stricter “engaged views” metric will still be available in analytics for measuring deeper watch activity. The new rule applies globally and does not change past view counts for older uploads.
