Anthropic’s IPO filing exposes AI’s $895 billion infrastructure bet

Anthropic’s updated IPO filing shows the unusual economics behind the AI boom: the maker of Claude generated nearly $17 billion in third-quarter revenue, about 12 times a year earlier, while reporting a $23.3 billion net loss. Much of the headline loss came from accounting revaluations of financing tied to the company’s rising value, rather than from the day-to-day business alone; still, operating expenses reached $17.5 billion as it raced to secure computing power. It has now committed about $895 billion to purchases and leases, largely for chips, data centers, and other AI infrastructure, with roughly $70 billion due within a year. For potential IPO investors, the question is no longer whether demand exists, but whether revenue can grow fast enough to support an exceptionally large, long-term bill for the hardware that serves it.
