China’s share of global container exports reaches 40%

China accounted for 40% of goods exported worldwide in shipping containers over the latest rolling three-month period, the Financial Times reported, citing the president of the European Union Chamber of Commerce in China. The share was 2.5 percentage points higher than nine months earlier—a fast move in a measure that tracks the standardized boxes carrying much of the world’s manufactured trade. It suggests China is leaning even more on overseas buyers for growth rather than relying solely on spending at home. For trading partners, especially in Europe, the chamber’s concern is that the growing flow could deepen already uneven trade and put further pressure on local manufacturers.
