Microsoft targets more than triple data-center capacity after AI crunch

Microsoft is reportedly targeting more than 38 gigawatts of data-center capacity by 2032, up from about 12 gigawatts today. A gigawatt is a measure of the electricity available to run servers, making it a useful shorthand for the scale of computing Microsoft can offer through its cloud. This is not just a bet on future demand: a shortage of available capacity has already forced the company to decline some AI and cloud business. The plan shows how AI competition is increasingly constrained by physical infrastructure—land, power connections, buildings and servers—and how strongly Microsoft is betting that demand will keep rising.
