Openchip secures €115M from Spain to develop RISC-V AI and HPC accelerators
Spanish silicon engineering firm Openchip has secured €115 million in public funding from Spain's Spanish Society for Technological Transformation (SETT) to develop RISC-V-based AI and high-performance computing accelerators. Authorized by Spain's Council of Ministers, the investment marks a major push for European semiconductor sovereignty and strengthens Openchip's role as a Barcelona-based spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center. The funding will accelerate the design of energy-efficient chips intended to enable faster scientific research, advanced data visualization, and intelligent services across Europe. This landmark capital injection, supported by the EU's Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, positions RISC-V as the preferred architecture for Europe's sovereign compute ambitions.
