Saudi and Qatari national cards start crossing the border

Saudi Arabia and Qatar have started a phased arrangement under which Saudi Mada cards can be accepted in Qatar and Qatari Himyan cards in Saudi Arabia. Mada and Himyan are the countries’ homegrown payment-card systems, so the change should let travelers use the card linked to their usual bank account more easily and reduce their reliance on cash or internationally branded cards. The key word is phased: acceptance will expand progressively rather than becoming universal at once. For shoppers and merchants, it is a practical cross-border payment link; for the Gulf’s financial infrastructure, it is another step toward making national systems useful beyond their home markets.
