SpaceX’s spectrum deal turns Starlink into a more credible mobile threat

Telecom stocks lost about $45 billion in market value after SpaceX agreed to acquire a nationwide block of low-band radio spectrum for Starlink Mobile. Spectrum is the airwaves that carry wireless signals, and the 800 MHz band is valuable because it travels farther and is better at reaching phones through walls and other obstacles. Combined with Starlink’s satellite capacity and planned ground-based equipment, it could help SpaceX offer a more complete mobile service—and compete more directly with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The deal still needs FCC approval and does not create an overnight rival; the sell-off reflected investors repricing the longer-term threat to established carriers.
