Startup says AI-tailored bacteria-killing virus reached a patient
Radical Numerics says it gave a patient a phage—a virus that infects bacteria, not people—customized with its AI system to target a severe drug-resistant infection. Phage therapy is not new, but it has been hard to find or adapt a virus that matches the precise strain infecting one person; the company’s pitch is that AI can shorten that search by designing and prioritizing candidates. This was a single compassionate-use case, not proof that the treatment worked: the patient’s outcome and key clinical details have not been disclosed, and the company’s report has not been peer reviewed. Still, if independently confirmed, the case would move AI in medicine beyond identifying possible drugs toward building highly targeted biological treatments when antibiotics have run out.
