Denmark’s Greensand gives Europe a working CO2 storage hub

The EU has launched Greensand in Denmark as its first commercial-scale project for permanently storing captured carbon dioxide. The project sends CO2 into a depleted reservoir beneath the Danish North Sea, using geology that once held oil and gas to keep industrial emissions out of the atmosphere instead. That matters because carbon capture only becomes useful at scale when companies have somewhere reliable to put the gas after separating it from factory emissions. Greensand will not make heavy industry carbon-free on its own, but it gives Europe a real operating link in the chain—from capture and transport to long-term storage—that many of its climate plans have depended on.
