FAA delays Boeing’s Max 10 approval over a software review

The FAA has postponed certification of Boeing’s 737 Max 10, the largest and last unapproved version of its best-selling single-aisle jet, while it examines a newly disclosed software problem. In a narrow missed-landing scenario, the software may remove some automated vertical flight guidance, leaving pilots to use established procedures and manage more of the task themselves. Boeing says pilots remain able to control the aircraft and is developing a permanent fix, but the regulator has not yet decided whether the issue is a safety-of-flight concern or how long its review will take. The delay matters because Boeing had been nearing approval after years of setbacks; without certification, it cannot begin delivering the Max 10 to airline customers, and investors pushed its shares down sharply.
