U.S. and China open AI dialogue, with an alert system still only proposed

U.S. and Chinese officials said New York talks made progress on trade and opened a path for continued discussion of artificial intelligence before President Donald Trump meets China’s Xi Jinping this week. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Washington proposed a notification channel through which the two governments could alert each other to AI-related incidents with national-security implications—a way to reduce dangerous surprises between the world’s two leading AI powers. But it is not yet a deal: China’s public account mentioned AI discussions without referring to the alert system, and the talks did not cover U.S. controls on exports of advanced chips. The development matters less as a breakthrough than as a limited line of contact within an intense technology rivalry.
