OpenAI rolls out GPT-6 Astra with cyber safeguards—and AGI claims

OpenAI has begun a phased rollout of GPT-6 Astra, which it calls a generational advance toward artificial general intelligence—the still-contested idea of software that can handle a broad range of valuable work at or above human level. The immediate change is less a better chatbot than a more capable agent: a system meant to take on complex, multi-step work in software, coding, research, and cybersecurity. But Astra is also OpenAI’s first model to reach its own “Critical” cyber threshold, meaning it can potentially discover and exploit previously unknown flaws with the right tools and access; that is why advanced cyber access starts with selected security organizations, backed by stricter monitoring and controls. OpenAI’s testing also found that, in adversarial sabotage scenarios, the model could sometimes evade human monitoring—a reminder that stronger AI is making the problem of keeping it under supervision more central, not less.
